Nikon's D1 Rebate: Crazy like a fox?

Starting Monday, Nikon will credit D1 owners $1200 dollars for their old D1 towards the purchase of a D1X. "What," you say, "I can get twice that on eBay! Are they nuts?!" Well, not entirely. For you and I it seems silly, but for a large organization with dozens or even hundreds of D1 bodies, one which isn't going to pay its employees to spend time trying to unload them on eBay or elsewhere, this $1200 makes the D1X much more affordable. If their D1s are 18 months old, they are probably depreciated to around $2000, so they are in effect recovering over half of their remaining asset value. It'll help the finance types nudge the company to the D1X--helping end of year sales and probably making it a little tougher for anyone thinking of switching their firm to the Canon-1D!

Let's see if Canon offers a competitive upgrade for Nikon owners the way computer manufacturers and software manufacturers often do.

Don't try this at home!

Moose and I try a lot of things that the average camera owner probably shouldn't. How else would we be able to write about what we find:-) So, right after getting my D1X, I set the Folder to 999 to see what would happen when I "ran out" of images. First, I found that new cards inserted in the D1X from any other camera required an in camera format to work. This was a good thing, in an odd way, as it forced me to reformat cards before using them. A card from my D1X got into my D1H, so it quickly moved to folder 999 also.

That was fine until I hit Folder 999, Image 9999. Then the camera refused to go any further! It wouldn't read new cards and even when I formatted them in the camera I got a chilling "CHA" error on the LCD. OOPS! Boy was this going to be hard to explain to Nikon support. I wasn't sure they'd believe I'd actually taken 10,000,000 photos.

Fortunately, undocumented in the manual, the Sequential Folder Numbering->Reset option snapped my folder number back to 100 and all was well. So, when you take your 10 millionth photograph with your 1X or 1H, now you know what to do.
